Sea transport is probably the oldest and most widely used way of moving goods. Oil tankers are used for the transport of oil and oil products, dry cargo ships for the transport of dry cargo and RoRo ships (from English roll on roll off) for the transport of vehicles.
However, the majority of commercial cargo is transported in containers.
The idea of shipping goods in containers was born and realized in 1956 by an American freight forwarder named Malcom Purcell McLean. At that time, the entrepreneur was looking for a way to reduce the waiting times during unloading of his vehicles that delivered goods to the seaport. The result of this search was the founding of the Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation (Sea-Land Service Inc. since 1960), which was the first shipping company to transport goods in containers on specially modified container ships.
The proposed idea proved so successful that two thirds of all goods on the planet are currently transported in containers.
In the course of time, not only dry goods were transported in containers. Currently, refrigerated containers are used for transport in temperature mode, tank containers for transporting liquids, platform containers (flat racks) for the transport of oversized cargo, special containers without a cover plate (open top) and others.
